The controversy arises in the third stanza in which it states that we will prevail over ‘slaves and hirelings.’ The British in the War of 1812, in which they burned down Washington D.C., and were bombing Ft. McHenry, freed slaves if they joined their army to fight the Americans. The stanza was never upholding slavery, but simply drawing attention to the fact that the British were importing foreign mercenaries as well as encouraging the insurrection of slaves in America.
